2022 WDF World Open Youth Events

While the seniors were engaged in the knockout stages of the Winmau World Masters, the youths were taking to the boards in the boys’ and girls’ singles at the World Open.

In the girls’ singles, we had two Americans – Kaylee Zerby and Kenzie Anderson. Both had posted a strong runners-up position in WDF events this year, Kenzie at the Cleveland Extravaganza, and Kaylee at the Cherry Bomb International. However, these results meant nothing as both slipped to first-round defeats.

Kenzie (the #12 seed) lost to Wales’ Yazmine Ruck-Harvard, while Kenzie went down to local favorite Chantal Tessin. Eventual champion was England’s Paige Pauling, who inflicted a 5-1 defeat (and an impressive 73.26 average) on Aurora Fochesato (Italy).

The boys’ results were similarly disappointing, with Seth Patenaude, Jeremy Demers, Kaden Anderson, Ryan Avellino, and ninth-seeded Jimmy Fitzsimmons all falling at the first hurdle. David Kramer made an impressive start, winning in straight legs against Dutch boy Cor Beukema, but missed doubles cost him dearly against Ieuan Halsall (Wales).

That just left three-time ADO National boys’ champ, P.J. Stewart. Seeded # 2, P.J. cruised through his first two rounds before facing Yorick Hofkens at Top 16. While recording his highest average of the day, a slow start left P.J. with a little too much to do, and the German took the match 4-1. The final was an all-England affair, with Kieran Thompson getting the verdict over Leighton Bennett.

So, tomorrow brings the Youth World Masters events, and let’s hope that the experience gained today proves valuable.
